Curriculum Intent Statement
At Harcourt Primary School the curriculum we are designing aims to build upon children’s prior learning, provides first-hand learning experiences, allows the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.
Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, development of early oracy, knowledge, concepts and values. We provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.
It is our intention for our pupils to leave our school with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
Teaching and learning at Harcourt Primary School is underpinned by our core values.
BELIEVE - in yourself, have confidence in your ability
ACHIEVE - we can all make progress and achieve
RESPECT - have respect for yourself, your school, the community we live and learn in and the wider world.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum with subjects being taught both discretely and as part of carefully planned topics. Within these topics we carefully incorporate key skills as well as subject specific skills which are applied across the curriculum plan to give an holistic approach to learning, sometimes led by children’s interests, whilst at the same time ensuring the development of individual subject skills and knowledge.
A wide variety of teaching methods are used, which are designed to give children the chance to learn in different ways. Children are taught as a whole class with both group, paired and individual work also widely used.
Harcourt's curriculum encompasses a variety of learning opportunities that your child will experience whilst at school. It is planned with clear progression and cohesion to make learning experiences relevant and meaningful.
The framework of the National Curriculum is the basis on which learning is organised; National Curriculum subjects are sometimes taught separately, at other times we adopt a more thematic joint approach.
We consistently aim to build on the child's previous learning experiences and engage them in a level of work that is appropriate to their needs.
